Teaching, education, and presentations about the lab and related topics from third semester students of materials science (2016-2020)

During the fall semester the lab is part of teaching and education events for third semester students of materials science. These events take place within the framework of the practicum III which is organized by Dr. Martin Willeke Each event consists of three parts:

  1. The first part comprises a two-hour lecture by Frank Lichtenberg for the students about the lab, oxides, synthesis of melt-grown crystalline oxides by a mirror furnace, a glass-ceramic composite material and technical ceramics and examples of their usage, examples of crystal structures and melt-grown crystalline oxides, and (raw) materials and resources on earth. The lecture is performed by using slides from a presentation which can be downloaded from external pagethis page
  2. The second part consists of a lab tour for the students including a demonstration of the synthesis of a melt-grown crystalline oxide by a mirror furnace.
  3. During fall semester 2013, 2014, and 2015 the students created a report about the lab, oxides, synthesis of melt-grown crystalline oxides by a mirror furnace, and / or related topics. The reports were read, revised, and approved by Mickael Morin from external pagePSI Since fall semester 2016 we have introduced a modified concept for the third part: The students create a presentation about the lab, oxides, synthesis of melt-grown crystalline oxides by a mirror furnace, (raw) materials and resources on earth, and / or related topics. Subsequently the students and Frank Lichtenberg meet again and the students present their presentation. Required or suggested modifications and questions are discussed.

The events, dates and presentations from students about the lab and related topics are available in the navigation on the left where fall semester 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019 can be selected.

Acknowledgement

We are grateful to Dr. Mickael Morin from the Solid State Chemistry Division of the external pagePaul Scherrer Institute (PSI) for reading, revising, and approving the reports from the students during fall semester 2015, 2014, and 2013, and giving a lab tour for some students at PSI.

We thank Dr. Martin Willeke for organizing the practicum III (lab courses III).
